Of course in a work of this kind one must get more or less of one´s actual data and the necessary bare facts and records from former volumes on the same subject, however original he may be in the marshalling of his incidents and the expressing of his ideas. Under this category he has to acknowledge the assistance received from many scholarly articles under different titles in the Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, from Mr. H.F. Cary´s Life and Vision of Dante, from a very instructive and helpful volume by Mr. William Everett entitled "The Italian Poets since Dante," and from Mr. J. H. Wiffen´s translation of the "Gerusalemme Liberata" and his "Life of Tasso." The works of two modern women writers on Italian Literature, Florence Trail and Marie L. Egerton Castle, have also been of help in furnishing references and data for the sketches and for the following review.
