Excerpt from Handbooks: For Bible Classes and Private Students While the rest of the great characters of Scripture have had much study bestowed on them, and deservedly so, standing as they did at the turning-points of national history, or holding aloft the word of life in dark and cloudy days, John the Baptist, who closes the Old Dispensation and inaugurates the New, has seemed to suffer a strange neglect. The books upon his life and character are few, even now. Yet his calm strength and nobleness, like that of a mountain, which does not shrink as the storm gathers about it and bursts upon it, the gloom of his environment, and the pathos of his end, make a picture without a parallel, even among the noble army of martyrs. There are two reasons to account for this apparent neglect. First, his proximity to the greatest world-character of all, to whom he gave testimony, and in the presence of whom he bowed himself. John and Jesus - to resume our figure - are peaks in the same historic mountain-range ;and all eyes, as is natural, are drawn to the higher, and all feet which have trod this Sinai at all, have endeavoured, in thought at least, to reach its highest slopes. In the radiance of the dayspring from on high, all earth-born fires, however large and bright, are paled. But if we set the gauge of our intention to John, we shall find him well worth our climbing, find "moral bracing in the breathing of his difficult air"; while, as we bring contemporaneous facts to his light, we shall see that they yield their meaning and significance. The second reason is, the meagreness of the records. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
