Besides those selected for the present course, the names of Boulton, Sturge, Cox, Vince, Bunce, Shorthouse, Lightfoot, Benson (to confine ourselves to the past) readily occur. Of the nine, only a few are Birmingham men in the sense of having been born in the town. But there is no reason why a city should not take as much credit for attracting as for giving birth to distinguished men. Birmingham has had a happy gift for this method of attachment. The Course was arranged somewhat hastily by the Social Study Committee of the University as a contribution to the programme of the Workers´ Educational Association for the session 1908-9.
