But without attempting to settle the respective claims of the departments of prose and verse translation in literis humanioribus - which, indeed, would require the decision of the previous question, what share the ideal should exercise in education - it may be conceded that, at any rate, next to accuracy felicity, and symmetry, and even elegance of expression, are worth cultivating; and also, I think, that they are best cultivated by a course of training, in which they distinctively hold the foremost place. This only relates to exercises where the mind is called upon to clothe with language ideas external to itself, and therefore does not include original versification, with which we have at present no concern.
