Excerpt from A Collection of the Parliamentary Debates in England, Vol. 8: From the Year M, DC, LXVIII to the Present Time In the former Volume we gave some account of the proceedings of the House of Commons about the South-sea affair; but not having room to finish that matter, we shall now resume the Parliamentary proceedings about it. The House of Lords had now entered upon the South-sea affair, and had made a considerable progress in that inquiry. Their Lordships being met again on the 9th of January, the sub-governor and deputy-governor of the South-sea company laid before them several of the Papers they had called for, and the next Day their Lordships went into a grand committee, of which the Earl Clarendon was chosen chairman, to consider of the state of the nation, with relation to publick credit. Some of the court Lords were the first that complained of the mismanagement of the South-sea directors, which had occasioned the present distress and calamity, and among the rest, Earl Stanhope said, ´That the estates of the criminals, whether directors or not directors, ought to be confiscated, to make good the public losses.´ About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
