During the heat of those never to be forgotten wars in Italy between the Emperor Charles the 5th. and Francis the first King of France; Andrew Doria, a general very famous both for courage and skill in maritime affairs, fought under the French colours; his conduct wonderfully kept up the reputation and promoted the interests of that crown: While at the same time that he faithfully discharged the trust reposed in him he took a severe revenge of the Spaniards for those cruelties they exercised at the sacking of Gemma in the year 1522.
