Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Lynn Review: A Monthly Epitome of Lynn Affairs Never did a new school year open with so little public notice, the main question in some cases having been whether teachers would be able to get back from Europe. But though educational matters have been to some extent subordinated to great events, it is likely that the war will have a considerable influence upon education in this country, says the Springfield Republican. It ought to give some stimulus to the study of geography, history and languages, subjects by no means neglected in this country, yet not pressed with such energy or success as elsewhere, largely for lack of incentive. If Americans spend years in studying French or German without really learning it, it is because they do not have to; it is a school subject like Latin or Greek, and the pupil is more concerned with passing examinations than with mastering the language for actual use. History and geography, too, are studied with some apathy, as dealing with old unhappy far-off things, and battles long ago. But now the greatest battles in history are not long ago, but taking place, and interest in this terrific European explosion may stretch to the length of a desire to learn how it happened. The war itself may be left to the newspapers, but in the newly aroused interest about the peoples of Europe, their governments, their culture and their feuds, schoolmasters may be able to break some virgin soil. And in the colleges a strong professor of modern history is likely this year to have things all his own way. Why keep the lights blazing the length of Market street on Sunday nights until midnight, with no benefit to local merchants, and one-third the light more than ample for the few pedestrians using this thoroughfare? Probably, being at the peoples expense, it is figured to be no expense. Social Agitator: "Isn´t it a shame the way they work the help in this store? Fifteen hours a day, and wages almost nothing!" Companion: "Why do you trade here?" "Oh, they sell things so much cheaper." With the new floor space recently added, the A. M. Creighton Company became the largest manufacturers of shoes in Lynn. Will any of our friends having a copy of the September Lynn Review kindly mail same to this office. We will much appreciate the favor as we need extra copies for our files. Theodore Roosevelt´s scrupulous care never to criticize unjustly, always to give praise where praise is due, never to vilify a political opponent who has done honorable and courageous public service, is by this time well known and is one of the reasons why he himself is enshrined in the hearts of those who have studied him closely, as a knightly figure above reproach. He has now made further exhibition of these admirable qualities, which are at the basis of the square deal, by saying of District Attorney Whitman, in a speech, at Yonkers: "He represents the worst type in machine politics." That Mr. Whitman has vigorously and successfully conducted the most notable prosecutions in the modern criminal annals of New York, and struck more fear into the hearts of bribe-takers and gangsters than the colonel ever struck into those of malefactors of great wealth, or any sort of wealth, is, of course, quite unimportant. For the colonel, it should never be forgotten, is leading a great reform movement, and why should a little matter like truth or decency stand in the way? When the other fellow is endeavoring to convince you that Germany has a grievance against England by reason of the so-called "business jealousy" of Great Britain, simply remind them of this fact: - Every English port in the world has always been open to German trade, and in many of them Germany has the bulk of the business. This fact largely answers Germany´s criticism of England, w
