Excerpt from Memorials To William Augustus Tollemache. My Dearest Brother, You have asked me to garner for you what I can of the life of one you loved so much, and to whom I was a happy wife for nearly forty years. I feel very incompetent to the task, but I will endeavour to give you a slight sketch. I will gather what stores I can from his own Journals, only piecing together the fragments to make all more clear and complete. I will begin with his family and childhood. He wyas descended from the Lord Chancellor Cowper, to whom, it is said, the nation is chiefly indebted for the settlement of the Crown on the Protestant family of Hanover. The Chancellors second wife was Lady of the Bedchamber, and a great friend to Caroline, Princess of Wales, afterwards Queen of George II. There were both sons and daughters by this marriage. Lord Campbell, speaking of Lord Cowper, in his "Lives of the Chancellors," says, "His family was illustrated by the great Poet of his blood and name still more than by the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire conferred upon his grandson." Lord Campbell also renders the following tribute of gratitude and admiration to the memory of Peter Leopold, Earl Cowper, Williams father. "He joined to the most exquisite manners a manly understanding and playful wit. From him I received kind and encouraging notice, when I was poor and obscure, and his benevolent and exhilarating smile is one of the most delightful images in my memory of pleasures to return no more." William´s mother was the daughter of Lord and Lady Melbourne, spoken of by Lord Byron as the cleverest and most charming woman he knew, and his best friend. She must have been also very beautiful, as may be seen by the large portrait at Brocket, dancing her child in her arms, and by her bust at Panshanger.
