For reasons which do not concern the reader of this page my sympathies were more strongly drawn toward those who had been worsted by misfortune than toward those who, favored by fortune, had marched on gayly and triumphantly. The story of happy lives is soon read. There have been happy lives, even among poets, but they are not many; for it is true of poets above all other men, that many are called, but few are chosen.
