Excerpt from The Roman Mass in the English Church: Illegal Services Described by Eye-Witnesses The following pages are an attempt to show by the stubborn testimony of facts that the present condition of the Church of England demands the serious attention of all who value the work which was accomplished by the great Reforming Divines of the sixteenth century. That work has been steadily and stealthily undermined during the last fifty years, and every effort has been made to reimpose upon the people of England the corrupt and superstitious teaching of the Church of Rome. Much of the real meaning and ultimate purpose of this movement has been veiled under the specious and sophistical plea that the Church of England before the Reformation was independent of the Church of Rome, and that the Reformers, while rejecting certain papal aggressions and assumptions, wished to maintain the continuity of doctrine unimpaired. Ritualistic controversialists repudiate the charge of Romanism by laying stress upon their denial of the papal authority, and by magnifying trivial variations of "use" by which the pre-Reformation Church in England was distinguished from Rome. The unreality of this claim on behalf of doctrinal continuity is shown by the fact that those who assert it find the provisions of our present Prayer-book unequal to their requirements. They are compelled to obtain from other sources the ritual and order which will harmonise with the doctrines they teach. They do not scruple to restore practices which the Church to which they belong has condemned and rejected.
