Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from David Swing´s Sermons This volume contains Fifteen of Prof. Swing´s very best discourses, all of which have appeared in "The Chicago Pulpit" and "The Alliance." Here may be found the celebrated Sermons, for utterances in which he was cited to appear before the Presbytery of Chicago, which will pass judgment upon the Orthodoxy of Prof. Swing, being impelled thereto by the charges of Heterodoxy against him, by Rev. Dr. Patton, a Presbyterian Theological Professor, and editor of The Interior. The volume embraces Dr. Patton´s charges against Prof. Swing, reprinted in full - also Prof. Swing´s Declaration to the Presbytery at the commencement of his trial. The following are the Sermons referred to particularly in Dr. Patton´s specifications: Influence of Democracy on Christian Doctrine; Soul Culture; A Religion Of Words; The Value Of Yesterday; Old Testament Inspiration; on the Deaths of Chief Justice Chase and John Stuart Mill. Chicago, May, 1874. Mary Price Collier. By David Swing. Upon thy grave adorned with flowers sweet, Whose leaves are bursting in this vernal air, The stranger comes and drags inhuman feet Across the tears and lilies mingled there. The heart that moulders in that lowly bed Shames the rude mortal on the clay above; She followed only where her Savior led, Her life no jarring discord, but a Love. From wreath of girlhood to the snowy shroud, The matchless beauty of that life to me Spoke forth each day in accents deep, not loud, And now comes back in holy memory. The Christ unknown where dark accusing word Fills God´s own temple with wild, savage strife, Burst from her heart, a music sweetly heard, The Matin and the Vesper of her life. They that have loved are they that shall not die, Souls cold and harsh men hasten to forget, The winter night comes soon, the summer sky Beams on in Glory though its sun has set. When times have come and times have gone again, And God has called the unfeeling mind to rest In grave unloved and all unknown of men, Fresh tears will still be falling on her breast.
