Still fearful of pursuit and unconscious of the fact that the policemen had given up the chase the young man sped on breathlessly for a square or two, then he turned up a side street, - gradually slowing his pace till he came to a walk; now and then he quickly cast glances behind to make sure justice would not overtake him.
