But this should never be done in a manner to instruct the young in the very footsteps of vice. When a judicious historian presents vicious character, he will faithfully show it up in its own detestable habiliments, carefully leaving out any species of information that would educate libertines, brigands, or assassins. And here I will dare to hint another fact, however unwelcome it may be to some. It is to be feared that the spirit of war is fostered and kept alive, in part, in the biographies of military heroes.
