Some of it was written several years ago; some of it has been written recently, but the whole has been carefully revised. It is the outgrowth of an endeavor - exceptional, as is thought, in its processes, tho not in its purposes - to find a way in which all that is essential to the methods; and results of scientific and historic research can be accepted, while, at the same time, nothing that is essential to the theory or practise of religion need be rejected. That, in our age, any endeavor with this object in view is deserving of the effort expended upon it requires no arguing.
