The subject has been handled before by various authors, and Mr. Wrights admirable Bible Word Book, to which I have been much indebted, might seem to entirely pre-occupy the ground. The plan, however, of this little work is somewhat different from his. I have not followed the alphabetical arrangement as in a Dictionary, but I have endeavoured to bring together those expressions between which there seemed to be something in common, while the index at the end will, it is hoped, give sufficient facilities for reference.
