It was a dull morning in the early spring. The clouds lowered gloomily, and the wind, blowing from the north-east, swept coldly and cheerlessly through the London streets. But, notwithstanding the threatening weather and early hour, the citizens of our vast metropolis were already astir, and it needed but a glance at the decorated streets to tell that it was the dawn of a festive day. A court procession was to pass, and this fact was quite enough to bring British subjects from all parts to obtain a glimpse at royalty. No expense had been spared to make this "gracious entry" a consummate success. Decorations were gorgeous. Flags and banners of every colour, interspersed with brilliant pennants, embellished the streets. Numerous devices worked on crimson and yellow cloth were suspended from the windows. Festoons of flowers spanned the thoroughfares; and wherever four roads met pavilions were erected in their centres, resplendent with gildings, groups of statuary, and elaborate ornamentations. It was a loyal display, but the loyalty had been organized. Committees of householders had held numerous meetings, when large sums of money were subscribed to raise the necessary funds required for the stupendous panorama.
