Excerpt from Tribute of Respect to the Memory of Rev. John Todd Edgar: Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Nashville, Tennessee It is with reluctance that the author has felt constrained, through the solicitations of many of the friends and admirers of the late John T. Edgar, D. D., to consent to the publication of the following discourse. But, while he does not feel at liberty to disregard the wishes of others in this matter, he feels it is due to the memory of the deceased to state, that the discourse was very hastily prepared, - as it was desired, and confidently expected till the evening immediately preceding the funeral services, that one of the Professors of the Theological Seminary at Danville, Ky., would be present to officiate, - thus leaving one night only for the work of preparation. With this explanation, the discourse is furnished for publication just as delivered, with only an occasional change in phraseology, and the addition of a few foot notes.
