Excerpt from Steam Communication With India It is confidently stated by those whose judgment, formed by personal observation, has become a standard, that by no other means will the prejudices, ignorance, and superstition of the Natives of India be so effectually corrected as by an international communion of persons and interests; and that nothing will tend more speedily to raise that country from the moral degradation in which she is immersed by the continued practice of barbarous customs, which are opposed to true happiness and repugnant to the best feelings that Providence has planted in the human breast. These facts admitted, the following questions naturally present themselves to the mind of every reflecting enquirer: - What are the barriers that interpose and prevent so desirable a project as Steam Communication on a grand and an efficient scale? Will the expense be so ruinously costly as to forbid an undertaking that would bestow so much good? Are the difficulties that prevent its consummation insurmountable? Do the Natives themselves object that a fair portion of the revenue of India should be expended to confer such vast benefits upon their land?
