Any interest the play has was meant to lie in the attitude of its chief characters towards current ideas. In Blanche Bowden I wanted to draw a woman full of intellectual energy and ideals who, since she was not strong enough to carry them on to achievement alone, longed to see them take shape in the life that was dearest to her. She finds herself handicapped by natural feminine instincts and comes to realise that the affections have still an unsuspected, sometimes an overwhelming, power of their own.
