Rinuccini, Archbishop of Fermo, in the Years 1645-1649: Published From the Original Mss, in the Rinuccini Library The translation of this work was commenced many years since at the suggestion of one, who to many distinctions added that of a passionate interest in the history of Ireland. It was carried on during a long illness, and when the MS. at the request of some friends was examined last year, it was found that a large portion had never been revised - that the pen had stopped suddenly some pages before the conclusion. To supply this deficiency and revise the rest has been the duty of the Editor. The first object through out has been a faithful, not slavish adherence to the text. Except in the case of proper names there has been no attempt to correct errors, or remove inconsistencies - no letter, no sentence it is believed has been omitted - and but few of the redundancies and superlatives in which the Nuncio is prone to indulge have been dispensed with. The Collection of the Carte Papers published under the direction of Lord Romilly, refer to the same period as the present work, and each may be found to throw light upon the other.
