Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from A Sermon Preached Before the University of Oxford, on Friday, December 13, 1776: Being the Day Appointed by Proclamation for a General Fast This Psalm is generally ascribed to David as its Author; but on what particular occasion it was composed, or to what transaction it refers, is not easy, nor is it needful, to determine. The whole Life of this eminent person was a scene of severe trials and uncommon dangers. While a Subject, he was harassed with frequent Persecutions; when a Sovereign, with repeated Rebellions. But his Heart was not daunted or dismayed at the most alarming appearances. In All his difficulties he relied, for safety and protection, on that Goodness, which gradually advanced him from the Sheepfolds, to the Throne of Israel; and in Many of them, he expressed the pious emotions of his foul in those inimitable Hymns, which are graciously preserved for the use of the Church, to assist Our devotion in similar cases. The Psalm now before us seems to have been composed, under a keen sense of the injuries he, had received, or of the dangers that encompassed him, through the implacable enmity of Saul, or Shimei, or some of their Confederates.
