Let his own words, taken from his magnificent sonnet to Cyriack Skinner, answer: - What supports me, dost thou ask? - The conscience, friend, to have lost them overplied In liberty´s defence. Blind, among enemies, Milton enjoyed that unspeakable consolation, - the reflection, that, for the cause of liberty, he had been willing to endure a trial worse than chains, Dungeon, or beggary, or decrepit age.
