Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Adventures of Colonel Maceroni, Vol. 2 of 2: Late Aide-De-Camp to Joachim Murat, King of Naples Knight of the Legion of Honour, and of St. George of the Two Sicilies Ex-General of Brigade, in the Service of the Republic of Colombia, &C. &C. &C This circumstance gave rise to various reports about court intrigue and calumnies, supposed to have been the cause of the King´s unexpected and precipitate return. Although it must be allowed that King Joachim had conducted the army entrusted to his command into convenient and comparatively safe quarters previously to his leaving it as above described, the Emperor Napoleon, over and above the displeasure he had expressed by letter to his sister and her husband, thought fit to give public evidence of his anger by causing to be inserted in the Moniteur an official announcement in the following words: - "The King of Naples being ill has left the command of the army and placed it in the hands of the viceroy of Italy. The latter is more accustomed to great administrations, and has the confidence of the Emperor." Stung to the quick by this certainly unjust comparison, or rather open insult of his brother-in-law, the King addressed to him the following remonstrance which, having never appeared in this country, I will venture to transcribe in an abridged condition. "Sire, - The wound inflicted on my honour is given, and it is not in your Majesty´s power to heal it. You have insulted an old companion in arms faithful to you in your dangers, not little instrumental to your victories - the sustainer of your greatness; the re-animator of your waning courage on the eighteenth Brumaire. "When a man, you say, has the honour to be allied to your illustrious family, he should do nothing to peril its interests or cast a shadow upon its splendour. And I, Sire, say to you in reply, that your family has received from me as much honour as it has conferred through my alliance with Caroline. "Although a King, a thousand times have I sighed for those times when only an officer I had superiors, but no master.
