Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 18: October, 1908 to May, 1909 There is a popular impression to the effect that a college man does not do well in business; that business can get along without him; that for the ordinary commercial enterprise the youth taken direct from secondary school will better serve the purpose of the business man than one who has had the benefit of four years´ academical training. I presume that the assignment to me of the topic, "The Call of the Business World to the University Man," reflects the conviction on the part of this university that one of its functions is to prepare men for the business world, while at the same time it raises the popular question - Can university graduates succeed in business? This is a day of industrial growth. The basis of society is changing from military and domestic to the economical and the industrial. I am told that the course in the science of education in this university clearly recognizes this fact, and includes in its syllabus text-books which elaborate this great fact regarding fundamental changes in society. It is in the light of this cardinal principle that what I have to say will be addressed to you. To make the issues clearer, let us define our terms. We speak of the "college man," and concerning "business." First, a word regarding the conception we should hold as to the nature of the term "business."
