Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Manuscripts Remaining in Marsh´s Library, Dublin It is impossible to state with precision and in detail who the original owners were of the small collection of manuscripts, a catalogue of which is here presented. Narcissus Marsh (1638-1713), who founded the library in 1701, when Archbishop of Dublin, and subsequently endowed it as Primate, bequeathed his great collection of oriental MSS. to the Bodleian. But we have at least some of his MS. music. The library of Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699), Bishop of Worcester, which Marsh purchased for his Dublin library, included manuscripts. The French MSS. nearly all belonged to Elie Bouhéreau, M.D., the first Library-keeper. John Stearne (1660-1745), Bishop of Clogher, bequeathed to Marsh´s Library all his books; and these may have included some MSS. It is not known how this library became possessed of some of the MSS. belonging to Dudley Loftus (1619-1695), jurist and orientalist. Those who may use this printed catalogue are chiefly indebted to Mr. John Russell Scott, of Willsboro, Londonderry, who, while assistant librarian, re-arranged the manuscripts, collected, enriched, copied out and indexed the old catalogue. In particular he noted the sie of the pages in centimetres. Thanks are also due to Mr. E. R. M´Clintock Dix, M.R.I.A., the eminent bibliophile, a devoted lover of Marsh´s Library, for a generous contribution to the printing expenses. Mr. Marius Esposito, M.R.I.A., kindly gave his valuable expert opinion as to the date of the older manuscripts.
