Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works and Novels, Vol. 6 of 7 By the word simple, in the title-page, I do not mean devoid of involution, which would render a story insipid as well as simple; but a display of common or probable facts, natural sentiments, and characters, so composed as to engage the attention and interest the mind: ex noto fictum. Neither do I mean by the word surprising, the marvellous, which conducts the mind beyond the limits of nature; but a series of facts so highly improbable as to seem impossible, till in the winding up of the story they are fully accounted for. The chief object, however, of this as well as of my former novels, is to mend the heart in the entertainment of leisure hours.
