Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Minneapolis a Short Reversal of Human Thought: Being the Letters and Diary of Mr. Harlow A. Gale 1847 to 1859 When Mr. John Burroughs came to the summit of years he wrote, "It makes a vast difference whether we see the past as poetry or whether we see it as science. As I now view life the great need seems to be Union of poetry and science." As I now view life the great need seems to be Union of poetry and science. Opposing forces are growing altogether too numerous in a world made for order, beauty and progress. Minnesota´s constant North Star, the handiwork of God, is our appointed guide. Happy the resilient spirit beneath it, who has a friendly greeting for all on the social highway of mortals, and lends grace to the common walks of life. The letters and diary which follow are the record of the day´s or week´s doings hastily written, and frequently not reread. The letters were written mainly from Minneapolis to Miss Elizabeth C. Griggs, then living in Bristol, Connecticut, one of these years being spent in her fathers home, - the other year in the Boarding School of Mrs. Atwater, West Haven, Conn. Mr. Gale came to Minneapolis from Massachusetts in August, 1856. In May, 1857, his brother, Mr. Samuel C. Gale, arrived and with him four other men to preempt land.
