Excerpt from British Columbia: Its History, People, Commerce, Industries, and Resources The intention of the computer and publisher in placing this work before the public is to provide and accurate guide to the character and resources of the important territory with which it deals. To this end information has been collected from many different sources, and, where possible, special representatives have by personal observation checked the accuracy of the data received. Many difficulties were naturally found in compiling so comprehensive a work. The distances separating one centre of provincial activity from another are frequently considerable, railway facilities and good roads in the hinterland being still in their infancy. Such difficulties were, however successfully surmounted. The publishers have every confidence that the articles dealing with special subjects will prove of considerable value to those interested. When the treated of has called for more authoritative expression than could be given it by the editorial staff the services of an expert contributor have been secured. The method adopted by which the country has been divided for descriptive purposes into various well-defined districts is one that, it is anticipated, will lead to facility f reference. The attention of readers is directed to the brief commercial paragraphs in which leading and typical businesses and industries in all parts of the Province are described. Whilst the publishers cannot be held responsible for every statement made, in all cases the utmost care has been taken to verify the particular given. No expense or trouble has been spared to secure the illustration by photographs of matters interesting to both prospective tourist and investor. Whilst the views depicting the scenery and cities of the Province Form a collection which the former will appreciate, it is confidentially hoped that the evidence of the camera will prove of value to the latter.
