Therefore to accommodate such inquirers, and to bring what he has written into a connected whole, he has gathered the different contributions together in this volume. There has been some repetition in the various chapters necessarily, because of the different circumstances under which they were written, but care has been taken to reduce it to a minimum. A difference in style also will be noticed, which is explained by the fact that some of the chapters were written for the publications in which they were found, while others were addresses spoken offhand and stenographically reported.
