Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Narrative of the Expedition Despatched to Musahdu: By the Liberian Government Under Benjamin J. K. Anderson, Sr. 1874 The expedition consisted at first, of Peter P. Capehart, Assistant Commissioner and six carriers namely: Jos. Lawrence, W. N. Yates, Robert Johnson, Joshua Simms, Henry Harrison, and Jno. Thomas. Having been furnished by the Government with the necessary means, I left Monrovia; Wednesday, May 6th. A. D. 1871, at 7 1/2 o´clock a. m. and proceeding up the St. Paul´s River touched at Virginia and took in Assistant Commissioner Capehart. We reached Mr. Washington´s wharf at 7 1/2 o´clock p. in. and were till 8 1/2 o´clock unloading, owing to a heavy storm of rain and wind, the banks of the wharf being steep and slippery. The next day we proceeded to Careysburg and arranged to have the goods transferred thither, Mr. Washington having very kindly housed our effects until we could make such arrangement, free of charge. Having succeeded in this, our next effort was to prepare for our journey in the interior, and having arranged the goods, etc. in convenient parcels for conveyance, it turned out that our baggage carriers were not sufficient by eight or nine men. Considerable time was spent in procuring hands, as very few persons could be found who were willing to venture even so far as the Pessey country on account of the wars and it was solely owing to the indefatigable efforts of Mr. James B Dennis of Careysburg who did all he could to induce people to go with us that we were able to get off as soon as we did. Every body dreading both the wars and the weather. On Monday 18th of May, we started from Careysburg; the road was all mud, creeks and marshes; one of the carriers, Johnson, fell into a creek and made an ugly cut under his left eye, besides wetting his kingjar of goods. We spent two days at a small native village called Gaystown in drying our goods and re-arranging our travelling-affairs.
