Excerpt from Catalogue of the Printed Books and Manuscripts in the Library of the Middle Temple: Alphabetically Arranged, With an Index of Subjects In prefacing a few words to the present Edition of the Catalogue of the Library of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, justice requires the statement that the whole of the present work, the Addenda alone excepted, is the result of the labours of the Rev. J. H. Rowlatt, the late Keeper of the Library. On the 3rd of October, 1641, Robert Ashley, a member of this Society, died, having bequeathed to the Society his own books, and a sum of money to be devoted to the formation of a Library. No special record has been discovered of the works which were the nucleus of the present collection; hut the. books bearing the name of the founder relate to Foreign Literature, especially concerning or emanating from Spain, as much as to contemporaneous English subjects, and indicate on his part an undoubted interest in the geographical and topographical researches of the sixteenth and earlier portion of the seventeenth century. A further gift of money, to be expended in purchasing hooks, was made by Mr. Cocks, followed, in 1658, by a donation from Richard Pepys, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland.
