Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Oliver Cromwell: The Man and His Mission The great work of Thomas Carlyle has not entirely excluded the need of humbler efforts to tell the story of Cromwell´s life. There is a large and increasing class of readers who by first reading a more commonplace narrative would be better prepared to appreciate not only the "Letters and Speeches," but also the series of dramatic pictures that illustrate them. Besides, the place of Cromwell in English history is too great, and has too many aspects, to be exhaustively treated even by a master, especially if the master have favourite doctrines of his own to set off by the light of a great example. In such a case humbler students may do service by showing that other points of view are possible. The subject of the book has a special interest for these times, because on many issues of contemporary politics - always excepting ecclesiastical questions - it seems as though the age were strongly inclined to the opinions of Cromwell´s soldiers. I have not hesitated to point out where modern Liberalism departs, whether for better or for worse, from Cromwellian ideas. On the whole, we have much even yet to learn from the unconventional vitality of conviction characteristic of those days. The present work makes no pretension to original research, and is indebted to the late Mr. Bruce, to Mr. S. R. Gardiner, to Mr. Sanford, and in one point also to the late Mr. John Forster, for facts not known when Carlyle wrote. Of course Carlyle´s work (third edition) has been the chief mine of facts and references; but it will be seen that I have made my own use of his authorities. I have not felt able to make use of "the Squire Papers." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
