Excerpt from The Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley My dear Alfred, - My earliest recollections are of digging on the sands at Teignmouth, between the sea and those red cliffs now bastioned by Brunel´s long seawall, and of gathering wild convolvuluses at the foot of the cliffs before the railway was there. I was little more than a year and a half old then; and my guide, philosopher, and friend was my elder brother, you, some three years and a half old. It has been a less joyful digging and flower-culling, on a shiftier and more uncertain strand, this in which you have been helping me round about the footings of Tom Medwin´s Life of Shelley. Still I have enjoyed it; and I believe you have. I know, at all events, that your learned and brotherly assistance has been of great value to me; and I am venturing, without your leave, to make this confession publicly, and to dedicate whatever is mine in the following pages to you.
