The Tzar´s Peace Manifesto at the Hague in 1899 was accompanied by a sort of Coup d´état on his own Royal Duchy of Finland. One of the most interesting political struggles ever begun is still raging in that beautiful land of a thousand lakes. Finland remains staunch to her religion, her language, her manners and customs, for no outward concession to a stronger power can apparently ever turn a Finlander into a Russian. The national temperaments are as the poles asunder. The suppression of the Finnish Press, the alteration in her stamps, her money, and the language in which her children are educated, only appear to make the Finns more doggedly Finlanders than ever. They might be led, they never will be driven. What they demand are constitutional rights, not autocratic favours. It is a struggle between right and might. This book is in no way a political treatise - it is merely the record of the writer´s journey through a delightful country, where up-to-date education and strange old-world customs are to be found side by side. It seems to me well, however, to add a final chapter to the volume, giving the Tzar´s Manifesto, and the Finnish reply.
