Excerpt from The Doctor In sending forth this ninth and enlarged edition of "The Doctor," the publisher has asked me to write a Foreword. "But what shall I say?" I asked in dismay. "Oh, anything," he replied easily. "People never read Forewords; they´re just put in for the look of the thing." Thus reassured, I take up my pen to thank all those who have given the little book such a warm welcome. The writing of it has been a sheer labour of love, and if I have managed to capture and to convey to the reader, some stray gleams of the winsome personality of the original, then I am content. His friendship enriched my life, and gladdened my heart, and has left an abiding memory at once gracious, tender, and gladsome. One cannot recall the Doctor without a smile creeping into one´s eyes. Coming to our house as he did at a time when the shadow of illness lay on it, his is a tender and an especially warm place in our hearts. "What!" he would say in pretended amazement, when I would tell him of the invalid´s improvement. "He´s not dead yet! He´s a fraud, a malingerer! I´ll report him to the Presbytery!" But at evening prayers, how he would pour forth thanks to the great Father God for restoring health and courage, and how near we felt the Unseen at such moments!
