Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Manuscripts of His Grace the Duke of Portland, Preserved at Welbeck Abbey, Vol. 1 He left no son, but his daughter Elizabeth married in 1690 the Rev. Philip Williams, also Rector of Doddington, and had by him a son, also named Philip, and some daughters. After Nalson´s death, his Collections appear to have been neglected, and a considerable part of them fell into the hands of Bishop Tanner, while he held a prebend at Ely between 1713 and 1724. Some notion of the number he obtained from the Collection may be obtained from the following fact. One volume, No. XI., consists of 356 transcripts by Nalson and Philip Williams, the elder. The originals of 164 of these are among the Tanner MSS., and doubtless came from Nalson´s Collection; and in looking through the Tanner Catalogue one is continually struck by one part of a group of papers being there, while the other is here. For instance, four letters from Robert Wright were read together; the first is in the Tanner MSS., vol. Ix., fol. 337, the other three are here, and no doubt the first also was once here. Again, Mrs. Gardiner, in the papers relating to Ogle´s plot, published from the Tanner MSS., in the Camden Miscellany, vol. viii., mentions that the King´s warrants to Devenish and Mosely are missing, both of which are here; and these instances are only specimens. It is even stated by Rawlinson, in the letter herein-after mentioned, that the whole Collection had been deposited in the Bodleian; but this seems to be an error caused by his mistaking the meaning of a letter of Bishop Tanner´s brother to Archdeacon Knight. However, the documents left by Dr. Tanner came eventually into the possession of Nalson´s grandson, Philip Williams, the younger, successively Fellow, Tutor, and President of St. John´s, Cambridge, and Public Orator in the University. They were by him arranged and bound before 1730. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
