With an enormous expansion in the volume of traffic, with a demand for increased speed and the consequent necessity for attention to the question of safety, and with an ever-increasing competition, there is need for the highest possible efficiency in every department of railway service, and, consequently, a demand for men who are thoroughly trained for the service they are expected to render. In the future many of these men will come from the technical schools, and for this reason it seems desirable that these schools arrange courses which shall have special reference to the requirements of such service.
