Excerpt from Burns in English: Select Poems of Robert Burns, Translated From the Scottish Dialect by Alexander Corbett That the dialect poems of Burns are not easily understood by English readers has been conceded by many eminent writers. Allan Cunningham remarks, "The greater part of his earlier poems are written in the dialect of his country, which is obscure, if not unintelligible, to Englishmen." Cowper writes, "Poor Burns loses much of his deserved praise in this country (England) through our ignorance of his language. I despair of meeting with any Englishman who will take the pains that I have taken to understand him. His candle is bright, but shut up in a dark lantern." In an edition of "Select Poems of Burns," recently published by Andrew Lang, he says, "To English students, Robert Burns is, and must be, a foreign classic. People who decline to read the Waverley novels because they "detest dialect," must find the author of "Tam o´Shanter" impossible. With the best will in the world, it is tedious to look up glossaries a dozen times on each page, or to desert the text for the foot-notes twice or.thrice in a line." Again he says, "His Scotch poems are, by universal consent as well as in his own opinion, infinitely his best poems."
