The absence of such epitomizing aids may be considered as one reason for these domestic stories having excited so little general notice. Another cause must, no doubt, be sought in the multitude of subjects that press upon the reader´s time and attention, from every side, leaving but a narrow space for the development of any particular study. The history even of kingdoms has, in the course of ages, grown to a size so monstrous, that a lifetime is scarcely sufficient to grapple with it.
