Amongst the lighter books which I read at this time was one called Mystifications, which gave an account of the way in which a number of the most eminent persons, in the Edinburgh society of the earlier part of this century, had been taken in by a clever friend, who had presented herself to them in a variety of different characters, without their having the slightest idea who she was. I happened to say that I thought they were easily deceived. A day or two afterwards a card was brought to me, with the name "Miss Sharpe" upon it.
