Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Memorable Shipwrecks and Seafaring Adventures of the Nineteenth Century The English Mail Packet, Lady Hobart, sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 22d of June 1803, steering a course to the southward and eastward, to clear Sable Island. On the 24th the vessel hauled to the northward, in order to pass over the northern part of the Bank of Newfoundland, and thus avoid contact with the French ships of war that were known to be cruising a little to the southward of the Bank. On the morning of the 25th a large schooner, with her deck full of men, was discovered bearing down upon the packet. The stranger displayed the French tri-coloured flag, and otherwise indicated that she took the English ship for an unarmed merchantman, that would fall as an easy prey to the prowess of her crew. In that surmise, however, the French captain was mistaken, for when within range of the Lady Hobart´s guns, a shot from the latter speedily dispelled the illusion, and urged him to strike his colours, and quietly submit to be boarded by a party from the English ship, sent to take possession of the prize.
