Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Arne: A Sketch of Norwegian Country Life The story which is here presented in an English form is one of Björnstjerne Björnson´s best works. "It is by Arne and by Synnövé Solbakken, two little masterpieces of the purest water," says Björnson´s best English critic, "that the Bjornson of the bonde-novellen lives and will continue to live. These two stories seem to me to be almost perfect; they have an enchanting lyrical quality, without bitterness or passion, which I look for elsewhere in vain in the prose literature of the second half of the century." Arne was actually published in 1859, but with 1858 on the title-page. It was begun at Ejkisdal, in Romsdal, during the summer of 1858, and was finished before the end of the year at Hop, near Bergen, where it was published. It has the distinction of having been the first of all Bjornson´s work to appear in English, although it was his second novel. This first translation purported to come from the hand of a Norwegian (Thomas Krag), in 1861, and it was noticed in the London Athenoeum of April 20th, 1862, but it does not seem to have circulated widely. It was left for the second translation of Arne to bring Bjornson´s name adequately before an English public. This version appeared as "Arne: a Sketch of Norwegian Country Life. Translated from the Norwegian by Augusta Plesner and S. Rugeley-Powers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
