The student, who has conscientiously investigated but a single paragraph of acknowledged literature, has made appreciable progress in this study; for method is to be found only by observation of the actual phenomena of writing. He will, however, in his research, economise both time and effort, if he knows what to look for. All, therefore, who read in order to write, should first comprehend clearly the laws which all must observe, and the liberties which all are allowed, in the province of writing; though, in regard to the laws of writing, it should be remembered, that a knowledge of them becomes really valuable, only when it has been informed by experience of the actual practice of authors. These laws of writing bear chiefly upon the mechanical parts of prose; which parts alone come really within the scope of a manual of prose-composition.
