Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Desertion Discussed: Or, the Last and Present Opposition Placed in Their True Light: Wherein the Characters Aspersed in a Late Tedious and Prolix Libel, Entitled, Faction Detected by the Evidence of Facts, Are Fully Vindicated; The Design of That Treatise Rendered Manifest; And the Deserters of Their Country´s Cause Properly Exposed Upon this Supposition, which every Man of common Sense must understand, and which the wisest Politician of them all can never perplex or confound, it is apparent that every Man who contributes in any degree to the public Stock, has a Right to inquire into the Measures and Circumstances of the Public, because they are in some measure his own. Among Slaves it may be Treason to inquire; but it is just, equitable and legal, while we are free. If, for Example, the Measures of that which is called the Late Ministry, and which the Public more than suspects might be called by another Name, were right; if their pacific Plans and great Proneness to Negotiation were advantageous to our Trade; if their keeping out of a foreign War upon any Terms was reasonable, then nothing can be more certain than that the People have lost by their being removed; that is to say, they have been put to a great Expence which might have been avoided. If the Excise Scheme was, as the Friends of it averred, for the Benefit of the Nation, it was a Loss to the Nation that it did not succeed.
