Excerpt from Transatlantic Sketches, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Visits to the Most Interesting Scenes in North and South America, and the West Indies; With Notes on Negro Slavery and Canadian Emigration In submitting these Sketches of Voyages and Travels in the Western Hemisphere to the public, I beg to state the reasons why I under took them, and also to furnish an outline of the route which I followed, in order that the reader may clearly understand the nature of the work which he may think it worth his while to peruse. In the beginning of 1831, being unattached to any regiment, and having already visited many parts of the Old World, I determined on an expedition to the New, previous to returning to full pay. I communicated my intention to the Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, and to other literary and scientific individuals, and volunteered to execute commissions for them in America or the West Indies.
