Excerpt from Contemporary Social Problems: A Course of Lectures Delivered at the University of Padua Some years ago a number of students of the various faculties of the University of Padua asked me to deliver a weekly lecture devoted to the more general notions of political economy - and of a popular character. The number of persons who attended these lectures was such as to convince me that intelligent people now are greatly interested in the development of both social phenomena and social theories, consequently, having received several requests to publish the lectures in the form of a book, I have decided to do so. In now offering these lectures - with some slight changes - to the public, I feel bound to add that it was no part of my plan to discuss the more burning problems of the day or to attempt to solve them; therefore anyone who seeks in these pages a profound and rigorous analysis of our social organisation will be disappointed. However, in a country which has a horror of a problem and dearly loves an axiom, the mere posing of a question, by inducing people to think, may not be fruitless; this task consequently is part of the duty of every conscientious worker.
