Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Selection From the Correspondence of Abraham Hayward, Q. C , Vol. 1 of 2: From 1834 to 1884; With an Account of His Early Life But with this exception, as little editorial interference as possible has been placed between the public and the letters. "The threads of human lives," writes Mr. Hayward, "are so closely and marvellously intertwined, that none can be unravelled from the rest without destroying the pattern even of that one. This is the condition of our social existence: we neither live nor die alone, nor can the history of our lives be told alone." Taking these words as my text, as it were, in entering upon my work, I have endeavoured so to deal with the materials before me as would best have met the approval of the great master of biographical criticism had he himself been alive to read these volumes. I trust I have printed nothing that is likely to give pain, and especially to any of those, with whose lives, Mr. Hayward´s own life was "intertwined." At the date of the first letter, Mr. Hayward was thirty-three years old; he had been ten years in London; he had just published his translation of ´Faust;´ and was about to make his début in London society, in which for half a century afterwards he was more or less conspicuous.
