Excerpt from The Revival of the Gift of Healing There is no more vital problem with which the Christian has to deal than that of the efficacy of prayer, particularly in time of sickness. This question has been forced to the foreground of Christian thought in these days, by the enormous growth of organizations which make bodily healing practically the centre of their religion. Certainly it is the chief attraction in their teaching. The situation is one of which the Church is compelled to take notice. First, because the healing is practised in the name of Christ, and it is claimed that Christ´s methods are followed; secondly, because many people have left the Church, and have discarded their belief in the Christian Sacraments, to adopt completely the doctrines of the new cults. The notice the Church must take may assume the form of criticism. That certain doctrines are heresies, and that certain teachings are illogical and fallacious, may easily be established. But such action has little or no effect upon the minds of those in the full enjoyment of a religion which is producing the physical and mental results they desire.
