I do not know "who advised the king to consent to it; but "I fear that he will suffer for it, as well as all "his kingdom." On the fatal days of St. Bartholomew, Charles fired with an arquebuse from the windows of the Louvre upon his Huguenot subjects, (who were crossing the seine in hopes to avoid the general carnage and massacre) crying out at the same time to the soldiers that were near him, "Fire!
