It may seem presumptuous, if not audacious, to describe Cant as our national failing, as an idiosyncrasy which taints us collectively, whilst we boast so large an amount of individual moral excellence. Now, a daring procedure calls for a justification, or, at least, for an explanation to start with, and for that purpose I append a few quotations from the writings of some of the most acute thinkers of our time.
